Measles is a highly contagious virus that can lead to serioud complications and death. Although elimination was declared in the U.S. in the year 2000, importation of measles to this country continues to occur, leading to secondary infections and outbreaks in mainly unvaccinated individuals.
The measles vaccine is very effective at preventing exposed people from catching measles. Our current vaccine schedule includes the first dose of MMR vaccine at age 15 months, and a booster at age 5.
We are encouraging all children age 12 months and older to receive their first measles vaccine as soon as possible. Our office will be contacting all eligible patients.
Children travelling outside the US who are 6 to 12 months old, or children have only received one dose of the vaccine (and are travelling outside the US), may also be eligible for a measles shot.
